ESANZ honours the memory of
Dr. Eugene Braunwald
It is a profound loss for the medical community. Dr. Eugene Braunwald’s impact on how we understand and treat heart disease is truly immeasurable. Dr. Braunwald wrote the textbooks that taught us cardiology. He elucidated the hemodynamics of valvular heart disease. He studied the clinical consequences of cardiac disease, and pioneered myriad drug and procedural treatments which benefitted millions of patients around the world over 60 years.
We echocardiographers might not know that Dr. Eugene Braunwald was the first to describe ejection fraction as a quantification of ventricular function. All of us will remember his landmark diagram about the progression of aortic stenosis.

Beyond his 1,800+ publications, his greatest legacy likely lives on through the generations of physicians he mentored and the millions of patients who have benefited from the "Braunwald Era" of medicine.
Dr Braunwald, we thank you.
