Dr. Akshay Hungenahally

  • Consultant Anaesthetist at Princess Alexandra Hospital, specialising in cardiac, thoracic, and liver transplant anaesthesia. He currently acts as the clinical lead for echocardiography and oversees the intraoperative echocardiography safety/quality program as well as the cardiac POCUS training program. He has acted as a supervisor for both DDU and ESC candidates. His technical expertise also includes serving as a medical perfusionist for cardiopulmonary bypass and  ECMO. 
  • Dr. Hungenahally has strong interests in trainee education and serves on the ANZCA Training Accreditation Committee and is a regular lecturer for the college primary and fellowship examination courses. He is a Senior Instructor for Early Management of Severe Trauma (EMST/ATLS) and has a strong background in simulation-based training. 
  • While working in Darwin he helped set up the anaesthesia transthoracic echocardiography fellowship program at the Royal Darwin Hospital to improve the perioperative recognition of complex cardiac conditions in Northern Territory patients. Akshay holds strong beliefs that echocardiography training should be accessible by all clinicians and at all levels.
