Dr Jo Irons

Dr Jo Irons is a cardiothoracic anaesthetist at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney. 

  • Graduated MBChB from Edinburgh Medical School, UK in 2002 and underwent her anaesthetic training in South-East Scotland School of Anaesthesia, UK. 
  • Completed a fellowship in cardiothoracic anaesthesia, transoesophageal echocardiography and medical perfusion at Westmead Hospital in Sydney in 2012.
  • Qualifications in transoesophageal echocardiography from the University of Melbourne and the National Board of Echocardiography.
  • 5 years as a consultant in cardiothoracic anaesthesia at Papworth Hospital in the UK before returning to Sydney in 2017. 
  • Dr Irons is actively involved in academic and professional organisations and is a Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Sydney with over 30 publications. She chairs the executive committee of the Cardiac Thoracic Vascular and Perfusion Special Interest Group (CTVP SIG) for the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists and serves on the international committee for the Society of Cardiovascular Anaesthetists (SCA) in the US. She is a co-convenor of the Sydney TOE course.
